Position Summary

The Metropolitan Opera is seeking an individual to become our new Assistant Director, Institutional Relations. The Assistant Director works with the Director of Institutional Relations to meet the financial goals of the Met’s corporate, foundation, and government lines, and finds new ways to expand institutional  support.  The Assistant Director will play a key role in maintaining relationships with current funders, writing grants, creating proposals, and handling elements of benefit fulfillment.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Prepare multiple types of proposals, sponsorship presentations, grant applications, reports, support materials, and other correspondence with funders on a timely basis;
  • Manage government contracts and reports, including capital funding;
  • Manage department’s report calendar;
  • Aid in identifying and soliciting new sources of institutional funding;
  • Facilitate and oversee the fulfillment of funder benefits, including dedication weeks, patron privilege packs, and requests for ticket exchanges and purchases;
  • Facilitate and oversee the internal production of sponsorship deliverables and funder crediting by working closely with the Met’s Graphics and Media Departments
  • Maintain Institutional Donor records in database
  • Coordinate annual Institutional Relations cultivation events;
  • Liaise with the Lincoln Center Corporate Fund to fulfill LCCF donor requests
  • Entertaining funders during the season;
  • Maintain collegial relationships with all departments and Board members
  • Provide additional support to the Director of Special Campaigns and Leadership Gifts

Qualifications and Skill Requirements

  • At least 4-5 years of development experience, with an emphasis on institutional solicitation
  • Undergraduate degree (graduate degree a plus)
  • Excellent oral, written, and, computer skills (knowledge of Excel and Tessitura preferred)
  • Familiarity with the performing arts, particularly music a plus
  • Diplomacy, tact, and ability to skillfully handle donor situations
  • Strong multi-tasker; graceful under pressure
  • Ability to work quickly and adapt readily to changes in priorities
  • Ability to work well with all personality types
  • Requires some late evenings for events
