Lohengrin (Mar. 21, 1998)

Composer: Richard Wagner
Librettist: Richard Wagner

Levine; Voigt, Polaski, Heppner, Ketelsen, Halfvarson

Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and Chorus

Approximate running time: 3 hrs. 28 min.

Ben Heppner is the Knight of the Holy Grail, sent by heaven to defend pure, innocent Elsa (Deborah Voigt), against the evil slander of Telramund (Hans-Joachim Ketelsen) and his wicked wife. Ortrud (Deborah Polaski). But how can Elsa truly trust her hero, if she’s forbidden to even ask his name or where he comes from? Wagner’s colorful music blazes under James Levine’s conducting, and the Met orchestra and chorus are a thrilling part of the storytelling. This is shimmering Romanticism at its best.
